In-Conference Certificate Course - Student Achievement: Making the Difference - Session 8 (Double Session): Assessment practices and teacher effectiveness

In this workshop, we will explore recent developments in language testing and assessment. We will consider experiences and impacts of language tests and other assessment activities, and the consequences of these in terms of learning and career opportunities. The first part of the workshop will examine key features of both summative and formative assessment (FA) in language education. With a focus on FA, we will explore how assessment activity in the classroom can facilitate the development of learning opportunities. Through an enhanced understanding of assessment, and strategies to provide opportunities for self-‐assessment and feedback, teachers can improve their effectiveness. The second part of the workshop will draw on participants’ own experiences, to explore the potential of feedback in their practice. Finally, we will identify some lessons for teachers, so that they can develop their assessment skills as part of the ongoing improvement of their teaching.
