This presentation uses data from research in Japanese universities to explore the concept of “professionalism” in language teaching. The presenter defines “professionalism” and illustrates its impact on classroom practice designed to foster learner autonomy. Participants will reflect on their own meaning of “professionalism” with the presenter. Intended audience: all teachers.

Richard Silver is an Associate Professor in the Faculty of Business Administration at Ritsumeikan University, Kyoto, Japan. His main areas of research are teacher cognition and learner autonomy.
