Exploring 'what works' in language classroom activities
In this workshop, we will examine a group of key principles to better understand the idea of 'what works' in classroom teaching. The principles, which are derived from game theory, are based in research on how people become engaged and motivated in the activities they do. In a sense, they can function as archetypes or ‘deep structures’ to define how teachers set up activities to engage (or not engage) their students, and can thus help to support teachers in planning, implementing, and analyzing classroom activities. By using these principles to think with, we can begin to build a sort of ‘grammar’ of language teaching in the classroom activities we do. This workshop is meant for new and experienced teachers and for teacher trainers. Participants will briefly meet the principles and then will have opportunities to apply them to their particular settings.
